1-Octanol is a colorless oily liquid. Soluble in 5 volumes of 50% ethanol or 3 volumes of 60% ethanol and oil, with acid value < 1.0. It has a dry, sweet and sharp aroma of fat wax, with the smell of citrus, orange peel and rose, like the cream-like fragrance of Saposhnikovia root, and the fragrance is not long. It is fruity, sweet and slightly grassy.
1-Octanol exists in the essential oils such as bitter orange, pomelo, sweet orange, green tea, violet leaves or in free state, or in the form of acetate, butyrate and isovalerate. In industrial production, octanal can be reduced or prepared by using octanoic acid in coconut oil. It can also be prepared by carbonyl synthesis with heptene -1 as raw material. In the presence of cobalt salt, heptem and hydrogen generate aldehydes at 150-170ºC and high pressure of 20-30MPa. After cobalt removal, they are hydrogenated under pressure with nickel catalyst to form primary alcohols.

Application
Mainly used in the production of plasticizers, extractants, stabilizers, used as intermediates for solvents and spices.
1. In the field of plasticizer, octanol generally refers to 2- ethyl ethanol, which is a million-ton bulk raw material and far more valuable than n-octanol in industry.
2. Octanol itself is also used as a perfume, blending floral essences such as roses and lilies, and as a perfume for soap.
3. Mainly used to prepare coconut, pineapple, peach, chocolate and citrus flavors.
4. It can be used as surfactant, solvent, defoamer, industrial additive, etc.
